I Wish I'd Known These 10 Hard Truths Before I Turned 30

This year, I turned 52. I still have a lot to learn, but as I get closer to 50, I've been doing a lot of introspection. What would I do differently if I could go back in time? What do I know now that I wish I had known when I was 30? This list of 10 hard truths are a condensed version of what I've learnt.

1. Balance

You will burn out if you do not maintain a healthy balance. Nothing will motivate you to achieve more than a good amount of relaxation, exercise, and sleep, no matter how hard you want it.

“I see a world on the edge of a blade. Without balance, itwill fall.” ― Victoria Aveyard

2. Make a strategy

If you don't have a backup plan, you'll find yourself in a situation where you have no idea where to go next. You'll be bewildered and terrified. Dreams may change as you get older, but the amount of planning you accomplished along the road will not.

“Nothing is more imminent than the impossible . . . what wemust always foresee is the unforeseen.” ― Victor Hugo

3. The passage of time

Every year, time will pass more quickly. You won't realize it until full months pass you by. The only way to slow things down — even if it's just a little — is to switch up your routine and try something new.

“How did it get so late so soon?” ― Dr. Seuss

4. Companions

Your friends' opinions of others are likely to reflect their opinions of you. Take as little role as possible. Nothing is more liberating than having a clear conscience.

“If you hang out with chickens, you’re going to cluck and ifyou hang out with eagles, you’re going to fly.” ― Steve Maraboli

5. Cash/Money

Make a plan for a time when you'll need a lot of money but won't be able to get any. Save as much as you can. Budget.

“While money can’t buy happiness, it certainly lets youchoose your own form of misery.” ― Groucho Marx

6. Interests

If you truly want to excel at anything, put in the time - even if it's only a few minutes a day. You are not prioritizing your own improvement if you do not devote the time.

Persistence. Perfection. Patience. Power. Prioritize yourpassion. It keeps you sane.” ― Criss Jami

7. Consideration

Even if it coincides with your own beliefs, don't take anything at face value. Always be suspicious and ask questions. Don't be scared to confess when you're mistaken.

“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.” ― Haruki Murakami

8. Dreams

You will constantly be focused on the next step, no matter how successful or accomplished you are. It's difficult to be entirely satisfied right now, but try to enjoy the journey.

“Life is now. Not a second before not a second later.” ― Yogini Patil

9. Your Existence

Spend less time thinking. You deserve to live a life free of the continual fear of rejection by others.

“Live in the moment… but don’t be led by the moment, or thepeople who belong to it.” ― J. Aleksandr Wootton

10. Your age

You never truly grow up, no matter how old you are. You'll feel the same way you did when you were 18 as you will when you're 50; the only difference is your age and experience.

“Truth is, there aren’t any grown-ups. Not one, in the wholewide world.” — Neil Gaiman
